Murray’s Funeral Directors have launched a community allotment where people who have experienced grief can get together and enjoy the simple pleasures of gardening.
Thyme to Grow, a dedicated plot at the Thorntree Lane Allotments in Swadlincote, is open to anyone looking to reconnect with nature, share peaceful moments, and enjoy discovering what can be grown.
The group is especially suited to those who have experienced loss, though the focus is on shared activity, fresh air, and gentle friendship.
Regular meetups are scheduled for the first and third Wednesday of every month between 9.30am and 11.30am.
Funeral Director Megan Smart is leading the project.
She said: “Sometimes families that we have looked after can feel lost following the funeral of their loved one, and we thought this might be a nice way to gently introduce something new to their week, where some focus can be placed.
“People can be as social as they like. For some, shared experience is comforting, but we’d understand that some people would come by themselves, with the intention enjoying the simple pleasures of gardening as an independent activity.”
Beans, peas, lettuce, beetroot, strawberries and tomatoes have already been planted, with empty beds available for people who want to bed in their own fruit or vegetables. Regardless of the levels of experience, everyone is welcome.
