Thyme to Grow: Gardening and Connection in Swadlincote

Murray's Funeral Directors Thyme To Grow Allotment offering a peaceful space for those who have experienced loss.

Murray’s Funeral Directors have launched a thoughtful new initiative called Thyme to Grow, offering a peaceful space for those who have experienced loss to reconnect—with nature, and with others.

Based at the Thorntree Lane Allotments in Swadlincote, the community allotment invites anyone looking for fresh air, gentle conversation, and the simple joy of gardening. Whether you’re grieving, seeking quiet reflection, or simply hoping to meet new people, the group offers a welcoming environment for all.

Funeral Director Megan Smart, who is leading the project, shared:
“Sometimes families that we have looked after can feel lost following the funeral of their loved one, and we thought this might be a nice way to gently introduce something new to their week. People can be as social as they want to be. For some, shared experience is comforting, but we understand that some people might come by themselves, with the intention of enjoying the simple pleasures of gardening.”

The allotment is already blooming with beans, peas, lettuce, beetroot, strawberries, and tomatoes. There are also empty beds available for anyone who’d like to plant their own choice of fruit or vegetables.

Thyme to Grow meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month, from 9.30am to 11.30am, and is open to all.
